Sunday November 14, 2010: Sam's Scarf

And now we begin the daily fun.
There were many gruesome days leading up to the day I started this scarf. Momma and I stumbled upon a fabulous yarn boutique in St Charles called Wool & Co. and I purchased a ball of wool lace yarn with variegated black and white tones. I bought the yarn with Sarah in mind and I had an idea in my head of how I wanted the scarf to look. I'm not kidding when I say that I started what will now be referred to as "Sarah's Miserable Scarf" no less than 25 times and I ripped it out every time. I wanted a lace scarf but the wiry texture, as well as the colors, of the yarn never quite worked with any of the lace patterns I was trying. I worked on her scarf for weeks (and weeks and weeks...), determined to finish it before I started another project, but I could never get the thing to look right and it was causing me to pull out my hair. Given my fragile state, and my lack of hair already, this was not a good thing. I wanted to be doing something to transcend my mind, not beat it to hell.
I was out shopping and I bought this alpaca yarn and the pattern with my girl Sam in mind as her birthday was coming up. The pattern is simply named 'Lace Scarf' on page 2 of a little book called 'Sumptuous Naturals'. When I got home I was so excited to start it that I had no problem putting "Sarah's Miserable Scarf" to rest for a while.
(oh, and enjoy the progression of the life of one dearly loved little amaryllis bulb)
